Week 3: Unit 1 Student Choice Activity

Choice 3: Matther 14:22-23 Walking on the Sea

1. The first reaction of the disciples when they saw him walking on water was them crying out in fear and saying that "It was a spirit". The scriptures say that they were "troubled".

2. In my opinion, Peter's reaction displayed a lack of faith... it seemed as if he was almost testing the Lord when he said "Lord, if it be thou" which to me shows he didn't have faith to believe it really was the Lord when He told him who He was.

3. According to the scriptures, Peter began to sink because he focused on the storm and not on the Lord... his faith waivered for the slightest moment which caused him to fall.

4. The scriptures say "beginning to sink to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me." The word "immediately" describes how quickly the Lord responded. This made me think that the Lord is constantly waiting for us to ask Him for help, and as soon as we humble ourselves to ask Him he will help us. He will never allow us to sink if we are willing to ask him for help.

5. The phrase "eye be single to my glory" (also in verse 68 the phrase "your minds become single to God") relates to the story of Peter and Christ walking on water because that was the only way Peter was able to accomplish this task. When he looked away from Christ and focused on the potential problems that would prevent him from accomplishing his goal he started to sink. Likewise, if we choose to focus on all the reasons that would stop us from reaching our goals in this life, or even our eternal goals, it is easy to feel overwhelmed and begin to sink in our own worried and doubts. However, when we have continual faith in the Lord, Jesus Christ, and his ability to help us through anything we are able to focus on the reason we can do it and our faith can sustain us in this life and the next to be able to accomplish all that we set out to do that is alligned with the Lord's will.
